Emojis. We all love them. We use it all the time when we text our friends and family. But, how about using them in a business aspect?

The first thought that might come to mind is that using them is informal and unprofessional, and is not needed when talking to coworkers or your audience.  We disagree.

There are times where they can be unnecessary, but there are many more times where they are necessary.  We are going to break down both spectrums so you can figure out when to use and not use them.

When are Emojis unnecessary?

Emojis are unnecessary when they can be left to interpretation.  People come from different backgrounds and think differently from each other.

This means that even though one person expresses a crying emoji with laughter, another can interpret it with sadness.  In a business aspect, this brings confusion and possible snowball effects to those actions.

When should we use them?

The best part of using emojis is that they emphasize your way of communication. You can send a good note with a prayer hand or smiley face to show that you care. You can add a diamond at the end of a motivational message to let people know that this message is a gem, and important to remember.

Even companies are joining in on the fun. From Domino’s to Taco Bell, companies are using emojis to express promotions with their customers.

For Domino’s for example, using a pizza emoji in their post is easy for people to understand. Although one user may not know English, they will understand the emoji since pizza is a common food throughout the world.

In conclusion, emojis need to be used in a way to emphasize but also be interpreted in the same way by all so no confusion can occur.

Use emojis in a creative way. In a company situation, using creative emojis shows your coworkers that you are not all about business, and you are friendly and approachable.

You can even start a trend within the company by using emojis. Companies can use emojis in creative ways by following trends.

With all of the talk about stocks, companies can use the combination of “diamond hands” or rockets in its posts to show users that it is following what is happening in the world.

Using emojis can be a great way to communicate with your audience. Although it has been seen as unprofessional, this belief will slowly go away and will become essential to use.

Just remember that interpretation can be a good and bad thing, so use your emojis in a way that everyone can understand. Even creative ways of using them can be bad, but if used the right way, it can be the start of a new trend and can bring in a whole new audience to your side.
